Fresh Finds @ Trader Joe's
If you've been following Whollybeezus for some time, you are very familiar with my Trader Joe's obsession. They have such a great selection of unique and reasonability priced goodies that you couldn't otherwise find at local grocery stores.
Their employees are also gems. One time, while checking out at the register, the employee asked me if I liked classical music. I was slightly thrown off. I paused. And then I answered: 'Hmmm, I'm not sure I do. I prefer dance pop. You know, Fifth Harmony-like stuff.' He didn't skip a beat. He just nodded his head. 'That's cool. Yeah, you do you, girl'. See, no judgement. Again, let me reiterate, their employees are GEMS!
Anyways, moving on. I figured it might be fun to discuss a couple of my favorite and healthy TJ finds. Let me know what you think! I'd be curious to hear your list as well.
1.) Riced Cauliflower & English Peas
This riced cauliflower is a dream. I always try to keep a bag on hand for quick and simple roasting. I spread it evenly on a baking dish, add coconut oil + sea salt + ground black pepper, and roast for about 20-25 minutes at high heat (400 degrees). It's a simple side dish and compliments pretty much any lean protein. TJ's also offers a similar riced broccoli variety. You know I LOST it with excitement when I first discovered it in their produce department :)
Now, the peas. PLEASE. I know it's a slightly weird item to label as a 'favorite', but these lil ditties are fantastic! Again, I like to roast them and will often add a shimmy shake of turmeric along with the sea salt and black pepper for an added immunity boost.
2.) Salsa Verde
Lit. That's how I like my salsa. This stuff is bomb.com. It tastes amazing with eggs! In fact, one of my favorite brekki-brunch kicks at the moment is sunny side-up eggs over a bed of spring greens. I top it with this salsa verde and some avocado. Ka-pow. It's a great combo.
3.) GT's Kombucha
Ah, kombucha. It's killing the game on Instagram lately, and for good reasons. If you're not familiar, kombucha is a fermented tea that has many health benefits - largely focusing on gut health and digestion aid. I've tried a couple different brands, but GT's is my favorite. Most local grocery stores in Chicago sell the booch. But, if you'd like a pro tip for bargain booch buying... TJ's carries two flavors (Gingerade and Trilogy) and are sold at a lower price point than most grocery stores.
4.) Frozen Berry Medley
Who likes smoothies? Better question... who doesn't like smoothies?! This frozen berry medley mix is perfecto for smoothie making. It is a combination of strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and raspberries. To be honest, I keep my smoothies pretty simple. I actually try to avoid adding any dairy and use frozen bananas for their 'ice cream-like' texture. Not lying. Try it! In a nutribullet I'll add frozen bananas + frozen berrry medley mix + almond milk + ground cinnamon + 1-2 dates (for sweetness).
5.) Chili Lime Chicken Burgers
Sometimes a gal just needs a BURGER! Oo, what a find. These burgers are delicious: not too spicy and packed with flava-flav. I like topping them with the TJ's Island Salsa (mango + pineapple based salsa).
Well that's a rap, folks! Next time you venture off to TJ's let me know. I'll meet you in the produce department. I'll be the gal hoarding bags of cauliflower rice and boppin' to Fifth Harmony. You'll be sure to spot me. Promise.
