Recipe: 'nana nICE-cream

Summer is upon us. I scream, you scream, we all scream for nICE-cream! Yeah, buddy - get your 'naners and let's make some ice cream. 

Step One: Let the bananas ripen before peeling. If they’re green or yellow to start with, leave them out until the bananas at least begin to turn brown. Not-overripe bananas will have something of an earthy taste, as opposed to the more sweet, caramelized flavor they develop as they turn brown. 

Once ripe, peel the bananas, cut into pieces, and freeze them.

Step Two: When the bananas are fully frozen, toss them into a blender or food processor. I do not have a fancy-pants high-powered blender (such as a Vitamix - pish posh - I WISH), so normally I need to add a touch of liquid (preferably almond or coconut milk) to get things groovin. Blend until you've achieved a consistently that resembles soft serve. 

Now that's the basic 'recipe', and once you've got that nailed down, their are 100x ways to jazz things up and customize your 'naner nice-cream. Recently, a couple of my faves include adding PB2, a handful of blueberries, or granola for some crunch. I've also experimented with adding avocado. I know, random, but the texture becomes buttery and smooth from the avo-fat. Definitely a must try. 

Also, if you know me well, you are aware that I'm a pumpkin freak- [f-r-e-a-k] - Yep. All year-round. I've found that adding pumpkin into the mix helps create an even creamier texture (similar to the avocado). I've been fiddling around with this recipe for the past couple of weeks, and here's what I've been groovin' on:


  • 1-2 bananas / cubed and frozen
  • 1/2 - 3/4 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin
  • 1 - 1/2 cups almond milk
  • Shimmy shake of cinnamon


  • Put all ingredients above in a blender (I have a nutribullet)
  • BLEND!
  • ENJOY.
